I would move a provider to the top of the list if they can easily restore a user's entire drive without spending two days going through the versions of individual files, and that is if they have the versions in the first place.Īnother thing that can be very important to think about is what is/will be the maximum file size that you want to upload? Most of these providers max out around 10 to 15 Gigs per file but I just found out Google Apps allows for up to 5 TB per file which could make Google an obvious choice depending on your usage. It is normally just one version of the file that is automagicly synced everywhere so you will lose it if the file is accidentally deleted, corrupted, or overwritten. One thing I have not seen here is that these file storage providers do not do backups. I am hearing rumblings from the Microsoft Ignite conference going on right now that they will make it act and feel more like Dropbox (my words) but I don't know how many months that will take. I am an Office 365 customer and I really want to like OneDrive but like others have said, it is clunky in the way that it works. I'm not expecting OneDrive to work quite as well as Dropbox but the cost saving will be significant and I'm actually hoping that I can push the majority of current DB users into 365 online web apps rather than local sync via OD and still be able to support a small number of folk who really need local sync to use the slightly clunkier OD. There are some gotchas as well to do with the max number of files that can be in the shares and max length of folder & file names but if you go looking for them these are fairly well documented. I have noticed it doing weird stuff to folders and files (or maybe giving users the rope the hang themselves as it were) but when things messed up it must be handling things gracefully and not losing data because with other products people would be jumping up and down when that happened (or when they did it to themselves).įrom playing with Onedrive for business I have to say that its a bit clunky and not great at explaining itself when something goes wrong.

That said we have had the least complaints about DB by far so whatever it is doing our users seem to be happy with it. When you think about it mechanically file-sync for diverse shares & lots of users & clients is actually a fairly hard problem to solve so its not surprising that the shares get in a mess sometimes, or that users get themselves in a mess. We've gone through a fair number of these sorts of file-sync products and DB definitely has some kind of secret sauce going on.

Dropbox gets kind of expensive as the user count increases (and OD is free to us as part of 365) and last time I looked (admittedly a fair while ago) didn't have fine grained way of setting file & folder permissions where multiple users at different levels are accessing the same sets of files. We have Dropbox and will be making the transition to Onedrive for Business. I think that "OneDrive for business" is just a sharepoint client, no? Needless to say it's a giant mess with no direction, as an IT person, my biggest concerns are around security, data protection, data loss and administration, and probably the biggest hurdle is there's no clear concerns or direction from the top down. We also have a ShareFile and we use Accellion for large file transfer. We have non-supported (a huge security risk IMHO) DropBox, iCloud, GoogleDrive, who knows what else out there that users have adopted either by prior experience or interactions with customers/partners/vendors/etc We struggle with this as well, we have an 0365 subscription so you would think OneDrive for Biz would be great, but the interface is clunky and few have taken the time to learn it
